Containing some of the largest known cave rooms in the world, the network of caves at Carlsbad Caverns National Park offer some amazing, almost otherworldly sights for those who dare to travel through its passages. A self-guided tour lets visitors explore some of the very first passages and rooms in the caves, but the ranger-led tours let visitors see even deeper into the cave system and glimpse some truly unique sights. Some of these tours are quite physically and mentally demanding, but they also yield some great rewards for those who take park. Stick around until evening, when a seat outside the entrance to the caverns offers the awe-inspiring sight of hundreds of thousands of bats spiraling out of the caves for their nighttime flights. Abutting Lincoln National Forest on the very southern edge of the state, the caverns are just a short drive southwest from the town of Carlsbad.
